Active Release Techniques ® Explained in Wall

Active Release Techniques ® is a type of soft tissue therapy that helps relieve tight muscles and muscular adhesions, greatly reducing joint stress or muscular pains. This natural treatment targets connective tissues, major muscle groups, tendons, and ligaments, restoring normal mobility between muscular tissue and nerves.

During an ART session, practitioners physically examine the problem area as they attempt to locate underlying scar tissue. Once found, they will isolate and target the area, using specific manipulation techniques to break up the scar tissue. This allows for proper blood flow so the area can begin to properly heal.

What is the ‘Technique’?

Using a combination of compressive, tensile, and shear forces, ART specialists attempt to correct repetitive strain injuries, traumatic injuries, and pressure tension lesions.

One method involves the use of deep tension directly in the area of tenderness while the patient actively moves the injury site from a shortened to a lengthened position.

Trained ART specialists like Dr. Criscuolo have knowledge on the best ways to have patients move to produce longitudinal sliding motion of soft tissues under the point of contact.

What To Expect From Active Release Sessions in Wall?

The patient performs the active motion of a body part, essentially extending and retracting through the full range of motion. While they are moving, an ART specialist applies tension, emphasizing the focus on problematic muscle and/or tissue groups. This has several goals:

  • Restores Normal Contractile and Elastic Properties to the Muscles
This allows for smooth, natural movements that allow for power and strength applied to the muscles, giving them a healthy tension that is required for athletic movement.
  • Restores Normal Gliding Mechanics Between Adjacent Structures
Locking and abnormal contact between joints and overlapping musculature and ligaments can seriously slow you down, as well as lead to inflammation and chronic injury.
  • Releases Entrapped Nerves
Nerves that are being pinched or impacted by adhesions or pressure severely impact your athletic performance. Sensory information sent to the brain from entrapped nerves is extremely painful and immobilizing.

Decrease Joint Stress and Muscle Tension with Active Release Techniques ®

The goal of ART® is to restore optimal texture, motion, and function of the soft tissue and release any entrapped nerves or blood vessels. This is accomplished through the removal of adhesions or fibrosis in the soft tissues via the application of specific protocols.

Adhesions can occur as a result of acute injury, repetitive motion, and constant pressure or tension. ART® eliminates the pain and dysfunction associated with these adhesions.
